The Lord, My Buckler

He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.Proverbs 2:7

"Buckler" defined:

A kind of shield, or piece of defensive armor, anciently used in war. It was composed of wood, or wickers woven together, covered with skin or leather, fortified with plates of brass or other metal, and worn on the left arm. On the middle was an umbo, boss or prominence, very useful in causing stones and darts to glance off. The buckler often was four feet long, and covered the whole body.

Webster's 1828

I must admit I haven’t ever thought too much about the purpose of a buckler, but after reading this verse recently I was intrigued enough to look up a definition. Within this particular definition, some things caught my attention:
– This is a piece of defensive armor, a shield, meant to be used in deflecting objects hurled at a person.
– The composition of a buckler was several types of material bound together to do the job of defending.
– It was worn on the left arm.
– A buckler was used to cover the whole body.

This simple explanation gives life, meaning, and hope in such a protective way! When I think about my God being a buckler for me, I need to be reminded of this:
– God promises to be my defensive armor, my shield, deflecting objects that are hurled at me. It is not my job to be my own buckler.
– He is equipped and capable to do the job of defending me as His child. I have no fear of His buckler unraveling or falling apart at the worst possible moment.
– So many times in Scripture we read verses like, “thy right hand upholdeth me” (Psalm 63:8) or “strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand” (Psalm 89:13). If the buckler was traditionally worn on the left hand, that would make complete sense as to why the right hand is referenced so many times to upholding or strengthening me.
– God offers full protection and coverage in defending me. I have full confidence in the fact He will not leave me unprotected or vulnerable because of doing only half the job of being a buckler.

Praise God for being my buckler! Remember that today when the enemy begins to throw his darts at you. God is your buckler. 2 Samuel 22:31
